City Arms

The City Arms was situated at 271-273 City Road. This pub changed its name to The Stick & Weasel in the 1980s and was known as The New Red Lion at time of closure in 2012. Now used as a Co-op convenience store.

I remember this pub when it was the Old Stick and Weasel Pub, City Road (London EC1). In 1985 I moved to London to live in the Nurses home at the St Mark's Hospital (now St Mark's Apartments) just across the road. I was a nurse and had just taken a job as a Staff Nurse at Bart's Hospital on the Coronary Care Unit.
The Stick and Weasel was very popular with the nurses, medical and other staff of the hospital and we used to all go over there after work for a drink, sometimes food and to generally unwind and relax. It was a very friendly place and very popular with us all.
I remember one time Su Pollard (she played Peggy Ollerenshaw in the popular comedy TV show of the 1980's Hi-de-Hi!) was there relaxing with friends one night. My friend and colleague Em (a shy Welsh nurse) was very keen on her and wanted her autograph but was too shy to go over and ask her. In the end I went over and asked her and she very kindly signed a photograph (she had some with her fortunately) to my friend Em. He was very chuffed!
