Smithfields

Date of photo: 2013

The Smithfields was situated in Smithfield Market and was a market porter's pub with an early licence so that workers could get a beer after an early morning shift.

This pub closed in the 1990s when the City of London Corporation refused to renew the lease as they wanted to redevelop the area. Nothing has happened yet and the building is still there derelict, although I understand it may be demolished to make way for the Crossrail railway project. When it was open it had a licence to open fronm 5a.m. to 8a.m. for Smithfield Market staff.
