Bishop Of Norwich

The Bishop Of Norwich was situated at 93 Moorgate. This pub has now been demolished to facilitate the building of the Thameslink and Crossrail railway programmes.

In the mid 1980s I worked nearby. We went to this pub on special occasions. It only served two types of drink, old ale and port. The draft ale was only available in 4 pint flagons and the draft port in a half pint flagons. The only receptacles for drinking were very very battered pewter mugs; you could not stand them down. Inevitably we would start on the ale and end up on the port.

I frequented the Bishop of Norwich with my mates during the 80s, and 90s. I worked in Roman House (since converted to apartments) on the corner of Fore Street and Wood street. We used to down a few flagons of Old Wallop and maybe a jug of port. My most lasting memory is of the Gentleman Doorman of military bearing who greeted us at lunchtime with “Good afternoon, sir” and if you’d really made it “nice to see you again” It took me 6 months of regular attendance to get a “nice to see you again” but it made my year. Very happy memories of a wonderful ale house now sadly gone.
