Bulls Head

Site of The Bulls Head, 2012

The Bulls Head was situated at 80 Leadenhall Street. This pub was demolished in 1990 and replaced by the building in the above photo.

I was surprised to find out a couple of years ago that the Bulls Head in Leadenhall Street had been demolished. It must have been a listed building as it was so old. I used to work there in the Summer of 1979. From around April to August. The young couple that ran it, lived above. I believe they had a young child. Unfortunately, their names escape me at this time. They also had a chef. At lunchtimes, the pub was open downstairs, with I believe a pub grub (and very good too) type restaurant upstairs. I worked there in the evenings. The pub was shut at weekends, except for private bookings.
It opened at 5pm. This was ideal for me, as I was a BT Engineer in the City at the time. I finished at 5pm in Houndsditch and made my way to the pub. Sometimes, if it was quiet, I was able to leave at 7 or 8pm, otherwise I stayed until closing, then went to Fenchurch Street for my train home.
I generally ate at the pub in the evening, having some lovely sausages in French bread. The sausages were sourced by the chef at Leadenhall Market.
I recall it was really a Wine Bar rather than a pub at that time. It had a very nice selection of wines. The proprietor was quite a wine buff I seem to recall. It sold one beer, Stones Bitter and one Lager, Tuborg Gold (very nice), but the import, not the UK brewed one. They also had a good selection of whisky's.
I worked there while I was saving up for my wedding. I have to say it was a very nice pub to work in. The owners were great and most of the customers were regulars and very nice.

Steve Thompson 1984/1985 I was chef here for a couple of years in the mid 80's. I took over from an Irish fella called Murray, and the proprietors name was Tim. The ground floor was a pub, with a couple of beers (Stones was one), and did cheap pub-grub. The first floor was a wine bar, with a bit more upmarket, (for the time), food. The second floor was a waitress service a-la-carte restaurant. Great hours for a chef. I used to start at 9.30 and finish by 3pm. M-F too!
Christine Murphy 1974 My (then) boyfriend used to know the owner, so would pop in for a visit occasionally, the ground floor was primarily a wine bar, with a restaurant on the second floor-run by a very charismatic German chef called Gerhart. The kitchen, I believe was on the third floor with a dumb waiter taking the food down to the lower floors! It was open mon-fri. It was heaving every day.
Tim Voelcker 1973-1988 I was the proprietor of the Bulls Head from 1973 to when it sadly closed in January 1988. I had been working for Bass Charringtons and left to take on the Bulls Head, and the Island Queen in Islington, and some other pubs in Ipswich and Norwich. By the time the pub closed I was running a wine business, Wines of Interest, in Ipswich.
