The Cogers

The Cogers was situated at 9 Salisbury
Court. The
name comes from the word 'cogitate' as it became a place for discussion,
food and drink. |

I worked at The Press Association as a
trainee reporter in the mid-1960s and The Cogers was the regular drinking
hole for PA staff, especially the editorial staff. Another trainee and
myself thought it would be a great joke to put a memo on the message board:
An editorial decision that, following complaints from the Cogers management,
PA reporters were henceforth banned from drinking in the bar. It was only
there a minute or less before one reporter read it, told his colleagues, and
had organised a protest group which was soon openly confronting the editor
who denied all knowledge of the order and was totally disbelieved. There
then followed a witchhunt to discover who had perpetrated this fraud. We
never did own up to the joke which had totally backfired. |
