The Benyon Arms was situated at 155 De Beauvoir
Road. This pub closed in the 1980s and is now in residential use. |

When I knew the pub it was in the hands
of an Irish landlord who was very keen on horseracing. He once said to
me,’You get three things in my pub: a good pint, a clean glass and
civility’. The perfect recipe! It was bought by Charles Wells and when the
old landlord left the rent was raised so high that the new couple couldn’t
manage. The old story. Demanding brewery accountants with no interest in
local communities. |

I was one of the Bar staff, the Landlord at the time was
an Irishman by the name of Gabriel and his wife Mary was the landlady. |

The landlord and his wife were from Donegal and by the
surname McCormack. They were good friends of my parents and we used to
live next door to them in the 70s in Willesden Green. Sadly Gabriel
passed away a couple of years ago here in Donegal. I visited the pub a
few times myself when working in London in the mid 80s. |
