The Gerrard Arms was situated at 41 Gerrard
Road. This pub is now in residential use. |
|
This was the local pub of the Fabulous Flexmores
from 1920 to 1934/34. They were also known to frequent the York on the High
Street.
Ellen Mary Ann Dunn (1879-1934) and her husband George Ambrose White
(1877-1933) were residents of No. 28 Colebrooke Row from (approx.) 1920 to
1933/34. They toured the UK, Ireland, Europe and the USA from the late
1890’s to the mid 1920’s. Ellen toured as Lily Flexmore, and George, a
comedian, as George Flexmore. Lily, who trained from a young age as a
contortionist, was famous as ‘the India Rubber Girl.’ She was still
performing her famous Toe-In-Mouth Dance at the age of forty-six.
George, an agent for Associated Newspapers, died suddenly in September 1933
at fifty-five years of age. Ellen passed away four months later, aged
fifty-four, on January 19th, 1934. |
