I lived opposite The Ingleby Arms from birth until aged 22. I was born in 1947 and, in the evening, when I was about 4 or 5 years old, I would stand on my bed in a first floor front room and look down through the window and across into the pub opposite and watch the men playing darts. There also seemed to be a nightly ritual where a large lorry would pull up outside the pub, the driver would run inside and a few minutes later run out, hop into his vehicle, reverse around the corner into Ingleby Road and drive off down Tollington Way in the direction of Holloway Road. It was some years before I realised he was just nipping in for a quick drink. The pub closed in 1955 and was taken over and used by the nearby Royal Northern Hospital as a Rehabilitation Centre for people with broken limbs. This finally closed in the 1970s or 1980s and I believe the building was demolished in the late 1990s.
