The Brecknock Arms was situated at 227 Camden Road. This pub was known as
The Unicorn at time of closure in 2020. |
|
Another music pub is under threat. The Unicorn
in Camden Town closed at the beginning of the first lockdown. A planning
application has now been submitted
that seeks to extend the building, convert the upper floors into seven flats
and repurpose the ground floor and basement to Use Class E for ‘flexible’
commercial use, most likely a supermarket. The area left for the pub/music
venue will be smaller than the supermarket and you have to doubt its
viability. CAMRA’s North London branch have submitted an objection. |

I was in a band called Stone Free, changed to
Evil Ways and changed again to Urchin.
The original band Stone Free was made up of myself - John Hoye bass, Adrian
Smith guitar and vocals and Dave Murray guitar. We used to rehears in my
school hall, Cardinal Pole which was on Kenworthy Road E9. Adrian and Dave
went on to be in Iron Maiden and still are today.
When we were called Evil Ways and then Urchin we played regularly at The
Brecknock - John Hoye on Bass, Adrian Smith guitar and vocals, Maurice Coyne
guitar, Barry Tyler drums. Urchin did make a single and an album before
Adrian Smith joined Dave Murray in Iron Maiden.
I later left the band and joined a new band called Headlights. |
