We used to live near this pub. It was bing built
when we moved there in about 1956.
As it was situated next to the Midland Mainline Railway, it took its name
from a famous LMS steam locomotive that was still used at that time. The pub
was on the busy A1 where it joined the Watford Way.
The pub was considered to be modern at the time. It had low walls in the car
park each terminated with a rectangular planting troughs full of flowers.
These walls and troughs were often knocked over by motorists, who probably
had drunk more than was legal…
I think that the brewers were Ind Coope. The entrance was elevated by about
five feet and there was an outdoor drinking area, about eight feet wide
there, where I was left with lemonade and crisps, while my parents went for
a drink inside.
The decor was varnished wood match-boarding with green tartan wallpaper . |
