I lived here as a child around 1979 (I was about 5). I
remember hearing Adam and The Ants and playing the table top video
games. |

Fantastic little pub when I used to drink there. Run by
Paul and Diana Thurgood, who packed in the pub game and moved back to
Yorkshire after a number of years. Some of the names I remember were
John the Fish, Tadpole and the Lee brothers who worked down the road in
a butchers, Richie, Clive and Julie (croupiers). Always had a really
friendly atmosphere. |

My wife Maureen and I, both Aussies, worked and lived in
the Sir Isaac Newton in 1980. Paul and Dianna were great landlords and
gave us a room at the very top of the building in return for several
shifts behind the bar. I remember the cricket crowd surge that poured in
during the lunch break at Lords & some famous musicians such as Peter
Sarstedt and Smokey stealing away for a pint during recording sessions
at Abbey Road. Paul had 2 giant shaggy English sheep dogs, one of which
left me with a scar on my hand! Some locals I remember were John the
Bell (so named because he drank Bell’s whisky, John the Fish, Hovercraft
millionaire and lovely bloke Peter Zivy, photographer Chris, Dawn our
flame haired cook who whipped up huge dishes of cottage pies, bangers,
mash etc and her boyfriend Danny, Terry Bourke the kiwi barman who kept
running off to Sweden chasing blondes, Mel the interior decorator and
his wife Jenny who offered me a room when the landlord after Paul kicked
me out. It was a warm and welcoming community. |

I worked in pub for a few months in July August of that year. Landlord
with 2 big dogs mostly hired Australian or New Zealand Cheap labour. I
have a feeling Owen you may have taken me for a game of squash
somewhere. It was the year when Yvonne Goolagong won Wimbledon and I
watched final in room Stupid as I was a big tennis player and was too
tight to pay entrance fee. Was surprised today to see it was no more. I
thought pubs were profitable. |
