Man In The Moon

Date of photo: 1970

The Man In The Moon was situated on the corner of Old Woolwich Road and Easthey Street. The building bears the date 1834 as well as the pub's name.

This pub is on a short stretch of what is now Old Woolwich Rd which used to be called Bear St. It is fifty yards up the road from Crane Street where Pepys stayed during the 1665 plague. He frequently refers to drinking in the Bear tavern at that time. Bear St was named after the Bear pub and I suspect the Bear was on the site of the Man in the Moon which was rebuilt and renamed in 1834 - possibly something to do with the royal observatory?
