The Woodman was situated at 105 King George
Street. This pub is now used as a private house. |

I can recall this small pub from my
childhood, and confirm that it was located as in the more recent photo in
your post, the house with bay windows.
My Grandfather Stanley Brown and his wife Elouise, lived obliquely across
from 105 at number 118 (seen in a street view now painted white with a
yellow door). My father and his two brothers grew up in that house and I, as
an infant, used to visit regularly shortly after the end of WW2. I would
have been around six years old.
Grandfather was a plumber by trade, and fancied himself as an entertainer.
He would regularly in his words "Put on a turn across the road" and I, being
a minor, would be sneaked into the Private with Grandma to view his
performance.
Sadly, I do not have any images to send you as most of the paper memories of
my growing up in England were lost during a flooding episode some years ago.
I do not recall exactly when trading ceased at the Woodman, but I cannot
remember it continuing to operate into the fifties.
I am now 81 years old, but in great health, and as sharp as a tack. |
