Two Eagles

The Two Eagles was situated at 27 Austral Street. This pub closed in the 1990s.
My family lived in Hayles Street, a short walk from this pub. It  was always a nice family pub and I remember the beer was well kept and the dinners being pretty good and very reasonably priced. It had a mixed crowd of young and old back in the day when peopled talked face to face and not screen to screen. Modern technology has much to do with the closing of the good old British Pub as much as anything I fear. I know many young relatives for whom getting dressed and going out to the pub is a chore, whereas, in my day we all looked forward to getting out of the house! Times change space.

I worked at the Two Eagles in 1992 and 93. I was visiting England from the United States and lived and worked in the pub for 7 months. It was an awesome experience and I met really amazing locals. Eddie and MAC and all kinds of guys. Good time!

I remember it well from working at the Lambeth hospital which was directly opposite. Used to use the pub for lunch occasionally and though I lived in North London would at weekends travel into to meet locals Friday and Saturday night, fantastic atmosphere always had a pianist and a sing song. Proper pub of its day and they should still be like that now. My memories of it are approximately 1973-1976. I think an Irish landlord had it at the time.

John W 1970s/1980s As a student and teacher at the nearby London College of Printing I used the Two Eagles now and then. At that time The Elephant and Castle area could be intimidating, but the Two Eagles was quiet and calm. A quite well known artist Craigie Aitchenson was a regular, took his daschund dog in. In the Eighties Tracey Emin showed her work in a shop in nearby Walcott Square and the pub had a few evenings of overspill.
A S Peers 1981 I worked, lived there as a student 1981, owners.I think J and Anne Greeley, proper pub, in thouse days. Saloon bar, public bar, I had never worked behind a bar before, and made rookie mistakes, so was called Dippy, didn’t appreciated it enough at the times, but was the best Guinness around, real Irish landlord. And I know why, certainly not the xtra cold we’re all getting now, can’t believe Guinness allowed it,
