This pub was closed for some years.
Squatters had moved in and were featured on TV in a series about bailiffs.
Squatters were evicted on more than one occasion. Eventually in 2017, the
pub was reopened. When the old signage was removed the old name of Sutton's
Radio was found as a dirt/ghost mark on the lintel. The pub is now trading
as Suttons Radio. Apparently the pub chain found a descendant of the Sutton
family to mark the opening. |

I worked here for a summer job in 1998
with a bunch of lovely Kiwi backpackers who were staying in the rooms
upstairs. It was called The Quaggy Duck back then. A very well kept pub
that served decent food, had some pretty lethal shooters on the drinks menu
and had a Quiz Master on a Sunday who was very easy to torment by shouting
out incorrect answers. Served a 'local' beer called 'The Quaggy' that was
actually John Smiths with 10p per pint off. Nobody ever noticed.
It always attracted a good crowd. A real mix of people who were, for the
most part, out for a good time.
Went back to say hello a few months after I left and found out from a
regular that the landlord, a really nice guy to work for who looked after
his staff well, had been on the fiddle and done a runner to somewhere sunny.
Don't know if there was any truth in it, but it's fun to think of him
legging it across the globe on the run from the brewery. |
