The Giraffe

Date of photo: 1880s

The Giraffe was situated at 45 Penton Place. This pub was named after the giraffes who were penned close by in 1834 , (the first seen in England). They were tended by an arab called Fadlanah in the Surrey Zoological gardens which opened nearby 1831 and closed 1855. The Giraffe was rebuilt in 1933 and has now been demolished.
