My family lived nearby to this pub through the 1950’s and 60’s. My aunt and uncle at 10 Kimpton Road (Doreen and Albert Hibberd) and my Nan and Grandad at 17 Harvey Road around the corner (George and Rose Harrison). As a kid of 5 or 6 I would sit on the step of the old pub with a packet of Smith,s crisps while my grandad sat inside at the corner seat at the bar on a high stool.
It wasn’t long before he said can my boy come in? I was soon tasting my first ‘shandy’ and feeling quite a grown up. Grandad worked the bar at times and also nearby at The Father Redcap to earn a bit extra. Nan would ask me to pop over to the ‘offy’ at the pub to get some beer in a quart jug and then she would put it on the hearth and stick a red hot poker in it from the fire. Very odd. The pub was warm and welcoming like the Nags Head on Only Fools and Horses. Everyone pulled together, a real community.
