The Windmill

Date of photo: 1880s

The Windmill was situated at 98 Wyndham Road and is now used as a convenience store.

My family lived in Toulon Street and my Grandfather drank in the Windmill in the 1930's/40's. My father told a story of when he was 5/6 years old (circa 1940) he had to wait outside the pub while my grandad was inside drinking. One day he had a china Popeye figure with him and it smashed when he tried to balance it on the sloping outside windowsill - the window would have been the one facing onto Toulon St now with a shutter.
