In 1896 Archibald Corbett, a Scottish
Liberal MP, bought 278 acres of land in Catford and Hither Green and built
houses, on what is now called the Corbett estate. Between 1896 and 1913 he
built 3,062 houses at prices ranging from £215 to £470 aimed at “hard
working and respectable people”. The development included shopping parades,
churches, schools and recreation grounds, and he donated a library in 1907.
Corbett was a Scottish Presbyterian, and gave his roads Scottish names. As
he was a committed temperance reformer no pubs were permitted. The only pub
east of Rushey Green was the Dartmouth Hotel in Laleham Road, presumably
named after Viscount Lewisham, the Earl of Dartmouth. The 1901 census has
the occupants as William W. H. Turpin, Licensed Victualler with his wife
Kate, together with three barmen and two servants.
was born and brought up at 116 Brownhill Road, Catford. The “Dart”, as it
was popularly known, was my parent’s local and many local activities and
parties were held there. Over the years the pub seemed to have lost
popularity and in 2002 the council gave planning permission for it to be
converted in to flats. |

My grandfather, Frederick Curtis, was a
regular in the Dartmouth Hotel, up until the late 1970s. He was a local
character, having won the OBE for bravery as a firefighter during the Second
World War. The landlord kept a bottle of Canadian whisky for Frederick's
exclusive use, or so Granddad told me when we went to the Dartmouth in the
summer of 1974. |
