The Tigers Head was situated at 350 Bromley
Road. This pub has now been demolished. |

When I was 16, in the early 60’s, I
worked weekends as a potman at The Tiger’s Head in Catford. Peter Oliver and
I used to lug crates of beer around the bars, keeping them stocked up, and
we’d change the kegs over as they emptied, and also washed glasses when the
bar staff were under pressure. The owner-manager would sit at the bar
socialising with customers, and his chief barman was a mad Irishman, with a
Napoleon complex, who made our lives hell. He would get up around 10am (an
hour after we got there), dip his hands in the drip tray (containing a
varity of beer drippings) and run them through his wiry red hair. He was
then ready for the day! And, despite his 5’ 2” stature, he’d throw
trouble-makers out of the pub if they crossed him. I remember the winkles
and cockles that were sold outside in a wheelbarrow-type stall; put me off
shellfish for life! We made a lot of money there, but it was hard work.
Happy days! |
