This pub was owned by my grandfather
William Stoneham before the war. My uncle Cecil Stoneham ran it with my
grandfather. My father Royal Stoneham also helped behind the bar. I have
many interesting stories of life in and around the pub all told to me by my
father.
I happened to be driving past The Carpenters Arms in the early eighties and
was horrified that it was being demolished. I walked onto the site and spoke
to the demolition manager and explained that it was once in my family and
could I take something as a memento. This lovely man let me take an oaken
shelf which was in the bar. I just about got it into my car and drove it
back to Worthing where I have a pub. The shelf was put up in The Old House
At Home in Broadwater. Then When I left I took the shelf with me to my new
pub ‘Ye John Selden’ Half Moon Lane Salvington, Worthing. West Sussex, where
it is still displaying a collection of earthenware lemonade bottles. |
