The Porcupine

The Porcupine was situated at 24 Mottingham Road. This pub closed in March 2013 and was bought by Lidl, with a view to demolish and build a new store on the site.
Another year has passed in the saga of the Porcupine in Mottingham (SE9 4QW). The revised application that owners, Lidl Supermarkets, submitted in May 2019 was refused by Bromley Council last November. Disappointingly, however, this was only because they considered the scheme to be an ‘overdevelopment’ and would be ‘detrimental to road safety’. In spite of their own pub protection policies and the London Plan, they had no objections to the loss of the pub itself. They appear to have accepted the applicant’s argument that the pub would not be viable, something which CAMRA’s Bromley branch would dispute. Inevitably, Lidl have appealed against the decision but the Planning Inspectorate only started their consideration in September. Their decision is awaited with interest, especially as there is no residential accommodation included in the proposal.

Disappointing news of the Porcupine in Mottingham. After a nine year battle with Lidl, led by the Porcupine Development Committee, the Planning Inspectorate has decided as follows, ‘The appeal is allowed and planning permission is granted for the demolition of the existing public house and the erection of an A1 retail foodstore.’ The objectors have no right of appeal under the regulations as they stand. The permanent loss of one of the very few pubs in that part of Bromley is be very much regretted.
