Magpie & Stump

The Magpie & Stump was situated on the King's Road. Now used as a Nicolas off-licence.

I designed a new sign for the re-vamped Magpie and Stump in 1974. It was commissioned by Raymond Loewy Associates. Raymond Loewy being one of the major designer of the 20th century.
The re design of the pub was done by Roderick Gradidge, chairman of the Victorian society at the time and a neighbour and drinking buddy of mine from Marylebone.
The opening was quite an event, a few days before Xmas. We decided it would be our freelancers office party. The festivities, started at 2 PM and went on till midnight. Glory days!

Charles Lane 1980/1981 I was a bartender here. Being American, I wound up losing my visa and had to return home. Have always missed it and the landlord, Charlie and his wife.
