A friend of mine, Howard 'Nutsy' Gray,
managed this pub for a couple of years in the late 1980's. He was, I
believe, one of the first on the scene of the Clapham Junction rail disaster
in 1989. The railway line ran just behind the pub. I frequented this place
now and again in the 1970's. In truth it has to be said that it was really
not a nice pub at all. The main entertainment in there was the Saturday
evening brawl that would inevitably break out after all the local hard men
and market traders had been drinking all day. A typical south London spit
and sawdust pub. One good point, they used to serve draught Colt 45 malt.
Not many places around that did that. On a scale of one to ten I would give
it 4. There were very many much nicer pubs in the area. |
