Queen Victoria

The Queen Victoria was situated on
Falcon Road. This pub was later known as The Spiky Hedgehog and has now been
demolished. |

I lived in this pub from 1966 - 1972,
my parents were tenants. This was a large pub with four bars, three tills
and three price points for the same drink. We had live-in bar staff and lots
of activities; piano bar, dart bar (both public bars, with the same prices),
tv bar(called the Private bar) mostly for Saturday horse racing (with a
telephone to the bookies) and a added price differential on the drinks, and
then the saloon lounge bar, all individual seating (no bench or wall
seating), low tables and beer and spirits served in brand-specific
glassware. My dad was also a trained wine merchant so he knew his wines and
spirits and this was useful for the mostly older clientele in the saloon
lounge bar. The Winstanley estate was still going up when we arrived in ’66
so we benefitted a lot from the construction boys who were working right
behind us. At weekends a shellfish stall used to operate outside our doors
and this was very popular. |
