The Beehive

The Beehive was situated at 36 Railway Side. This Watneys pub closed in the 1980s and was converted to a cottage. The actual cottage is still there but now a private house.  It was run by a very elderly lady and seemed to be in her front room.  This was made as a normal bar but one room.  It had a bench outside to sit on in the summer.  It was very cosy in the winter.  I believe it was opened as a beerhouse for the market gardener labourers back in the 1860s.

It was actually owned and run by two elderly women who were sisters. When I was 13 or so (1957) they would let my pal and I have a half a pint of shandy and play shove halfpenny in the bar. There was a chair in the corner of the bar which was reserved for an old guy who would reminisce about his time in the trenches in the First World War and fighting the Hun...
It was a great little pub and in the summer we'd drink our shandy sitting on the bench outside. The two women were firm about only allowing us half a pint each...
