The Castelnau

The Castelnau was situated at 201a Castelnau.

This pub ‘The Castelnau’ (as it appears on this list) had many name changes over the years. It sits on the junction of a road called Castelnau (hence the name) and Lonsdale Road. It has also been known as ‘The Garden House’ (early to mid 1990’s), The Porterhouse Inn (late 1990’s), Browns, the big chain (early 00’s), and most recently ‘The Boileau Arms’ (mid to late 00’s)pronounced ‘boiler’ despite being a French word!, and named after Boileau Road which is nearby and off Lonsdale Road.
I last went to this pub in summer 2007 when it was known as ‘The Boileau Arms’ and was a typical noughties style ‘gastropub’. It had an extensive beer garden which may explain why it was earlier called ‘The Garden House’ for a short period.
I’m not sure what the pub was called before the 1990’s - it could have been ‘The Castelnau’ as it appears on this list, or it may have been known as ‘The Boileau Arms’ previously during another period in the pubs overall existence.
The building still stands, despite remaining empty for several years (having closed around 2008), and recently (Aug 2013) there has been some building work going on. I’m not sure if this is refurbishment work before it opens once more as a pub, or whether this is conversion work to turn the building into residential flats. But it is extremely unlikely that this building will be demolished as it could be listed and remains an important focal building for this area of Barnes- with it’s commanding presence at the junction of Castelnau and Lonsdale Road, and highly visible coming from Hammersmith Bridge.

It was originally called the Boileau Arms but then changed in the 1980s to The Old Rangoon, prior to becoming the Garden House.

It was called 'Boileau Arms' throughout my youth from mid 1940's to 1960 when we moved away. The bus conductor would shout out in a Cockney accent, "Boiler Arms". Currently used as Bright Horizons Day Nursery and Preschool.
