The Castle was situated at 220 Putney Bridge
Road. This pub has been demolished and rebuilt several times. The
original building (see photo above) was demolished in the 1930s and replaced
by the building in the photo below. This pub was destroyed by bomb damage in
WWII and replaced in 1959 by the final incarnation which was demolished in
2003 and replaced by the Boathouse pub the following year. A temporary hut
was used when it was rendered unusable during WWII in order to retain the
licence. |

My Mother, my father's parents and
my dad's brother were all blown up when the Castle was bombed in WW2. My
fathers parents were killed and my mother and dad's brother John Wheeler
were injured. |

I was a barman here in 1985/1986 and the owners were Leonardo Diodati
(Italian) and his wife Monique (French). I doubled as a guitarist as
Leonardo delighted guests with some famous Italian ditties. I befriended
the Italian staff and ended up moving to Italy with them, marrying an
Italian and having 2 kids. Still here now after all this time. The
twists and turns of life..!!! |
