The Quill was situated at the corner of Charlwood Road and Quill Lane.
This was was my local pub; I lived in Quill Lane for 27 years, from my birth in 1951 until my marriage in 1979. The 'old' Quill stood where the car park is in your photograph, this was previously a coaching inn, it was one of the last bastions of the 'class system' with four bars, the public bar, the snug, the saloon bar and the cocktail bar, my parents and various member of my family worked there from the forties and fifties for Sam and Joan Beavis, a well run house with no nonsense. the 'old' Quill was knocked down and replaced with the building in your photo during the sixties, I had the privilege of laying the first brick. My Grandmother and my Mother both worked as cleaners and chefs for many years, my aunt worked behind the bar, my Mother's uncle was the bar/cellarman and my Father occasionally worked behind the bar, and I was known to do a little bottling up at times as well before the pub opened. After the death of Sam Beavis his wife Joan continued on for some years until her death in the seventies, the next mangers were Ken and Lynn Tabor who were still there when I left the area.

Built by a Putney-born solicitor and property developer, Henry Scarth. Opened in 1854, rebuilt in 1964, then demolished and flats built on the site in 2003 (see photo below).
