Man In The Moon

The Man In The Moon was situated on the King's Road and hosted pub theatres. This pub closed in 2003 and was replaced by a pizza restaurant.

I am writing about my early life in Chelsea around 1957 when I would have been six years old. I remembered my nan would sometimes be in the pub, (The Man in the Moon,) when my mum and I visited. Mum would go in to see nan, and I would have to stand outside by the side door eating a couple of the big dry biscuits that were on the bar counter, as kids weren't allowed inside in those days. I couldn't remember the pub's name at first, the only one I could remember was The World's End, not too far away from this one.Sorry I haven't a more interesting story, if I'd have been older, no doubt I would have had a few tales to tell.

I lived part time above the Man in the Moon in the '80's ran then by Kevin Moran. He now has the Nag's Head, Kinnerton St. S.W.1. Below are some photos I took at the time.... and what an exciting and fascinating time it was! I had many portrait commissions from various punters...Am very very sad the pub no longer is.

I lived over the road from her in 2002. I was a student looking for part-time work. I'd worked for several years in bars before part time. I was interviewed by the rather chippy bar maid who asked me if I knew what a St Clements was. I didn't and I didn't get the job. I don't think I've ever heard that drink referred to since!

One day in the early '80's I walked into the Man in the Moon at lunchtime. It was empty apart from Phil Lynott and Junior Giscombe sitting on stools at the bar. Phil turned around and gave me a big grin - aged 17 I was so starstruck I left! Still a great memory for me as I never saw him play live and I'd skived off fashion college that day for a prowl down the King's Road.

A short video came up on YouTube that has Brian Setzer talking about a song of his and he mentions the Man In The Moon Pub on the Kings Road, London. I am familiar with the area and wanted to see if the pub still existed, but sadly it’s been over 20 years since it’s passing. Here is the video, in which he and The Stray Cats band used to frequent, in his own words, it had the best juke box in London.

Kayleigh Traves 2001/2003 My mum ran this pub back in early 2000 and we lived above it. The theatre was still being used part time. This pub had all sorts of quirky parts to it and lovely orginal features. Wonderful locals always was busy, enjoyed growing up here a tragedy when the brewery decided to sell it to see all that history ripped out and skipped a real shame and sadness you just don't find pubs like that anymore.
Lonnie James Early 1990s Acted at the theatre in a couple of productions loved working there.
Arlene Paige 1978 Worked at the Roebuck & Moon was popular with journalists. Christine Keeler was had for 50 quid there. Met a very handsome Russian whose friends came along-- a scruffy pair, one badly scarred. The Russian & I made a date for that evening but he didn't come. A day or so later Scarface was standing around, looking sinister. Anyone know of foul play in that neighborhood? I lived in with interesting sorts. It was great fun, but had a dark side.
Tooting Ray 1974/1976 Used to have use of the cellar bar for a Rock 'n' Roll meeting from 1975/76, but found the place a couple of years before. Run by Mike Young at that time. Remember he had to daughters. Club was "CSA(GB) 1975" and we had a good mixed following back in the day ;)
Anne Thwaites 1980 Loved working in this Pub, had so much character Various celebrities would often pop in to chitchat with Kevin...Jon Finch, Hazel O Connor Paul Angellis, was in awe of Kevins son Peter who used to do Heinz advertisments.
