The Notting Barn Tavern was situated at 40 Silchester Road. This pub was demolished in 1989 and is now the site of Arthur Court.

I lived in Robinson House Bramley Road, which was just across the road from the pub. My granddad, Bertie Kirkum was a regular when I was a child in the fifties and sixties. He always referred to "going for a sherbet" when he would stroll over the road for his nightly couple of pints. Granddad and his 5 daughters moved into Robinson House in the very late 30's , before the war. He had lost my grandmother about 1936 and was living in a dump in Portand Road. As they were demolishing this part of Portland Road, he was moved into property run by the Kensington Housing Trust. Suddenly an indoor toilet and bathroom. Luxury. There were times when my granddads daughters came to visit, usually once a fortnight on a Friday. They had all married and moved out, and my mum and dad had remained living with him. I have brilliant memories of those times as all the men would venture to the Barn and later followed by the wives and children. Crisps and lemonade outside on warmer evenings, left at home at other times. As I got older, Sunday lunchtime drinks and a game of darts in the public bar, and then perhaps some prawns or winkles or something from the shelled fish man outside. My best memory happened on the 14th June 1970. It was the World Cup and England were playing West Germany in the quarter finals in Mexico. The Barn had a colour TV so me and a couple of mates went and had a few pints whilst the game was on. It was jubilation when we were 2 nil up, and then defeat and humiliation. So off we went to the Hammersmith Palais and that night I met my wife. So that day has lots of memories and partly enshrined because of my visit to the Barn that night. By the way, I am writing this a month before our 47th wedding anniversary and 50 years since that eventful day!
