The Star

The Star was situated at 44-48 Queensdale Road. This pub closed c1998.
My Grandfather owned The Star during WW2 and for a long time after the war ended. His name was Henry Samuel Perkins and his wife my Grandmother Ellen Mary. He was a Police Constable in 1914 and on the Marriage of his oldest Daughter Margaret in 1938 he was still a Police Constable but his Address was already 46 Queensdale Road N11. By the time of the Marriage of his second Daughter my Mother Kathleen Amy in 1939 the Marriage Cert. had his occupation as Licensed Victualler. There are Family photos showing my elder Brothers and Sister in the small back garden ( not much more than a yard really ) seated at some metal Tables and Chairs. My Parents lived with My Grandparents in The Star during the War Years and my elder Brothers and Sister were born in the Pub. My youngest Brother Jefferey was born upstairs in one of the Bedrooms during an Air Raid. My Mother (who couldn’t move, for obvious reasons ) gave birth to him, wrapped him up warmly ( it was Oct. ) and placed him under the bed. All my Mother and whoever was with her, presumably my Grandmother and a Midwife, was to wait it out and hope a Bomb didn’t fall on the pub.
I remember hearing family stories of my Grandfather holding ‘Private Parties’ after hours. Blind eyes seemed to have been turned by the local Bobby who often called in. There was another story of the first V2 Rocket ( V1?) falling in the next Street, or a least very close. Not on the Pub or I wouldn’t be Typing this.
My Grandparents eventually left The Star and moved to Redhill in Surrey. My Grandfather died in 1964. My Grandmother had died two years previously in 1962.
