Tower Tavern

Date of photo: 2011

The Tower Tavern was situated at 21 Clipstone Street. This pub was built on the approximate site of The Fitzroy Arms, closing in 2021. It was named after the Post Office Tower - now BT Tower - in whose shadow the pub lies.
This was our most visited 'local' in 1971 and 1972, when I lived just around the corner for a year at the "Polytechnic of Central London" Hall of Residence at 20-28 Bolsover Street (now the Fitzrovia Hotel). I kept this 'matchbox frontage' from the Tower Tavern, and still have it today (see photo below). My fellow Tower Tavern attendees, from the PCL, were - Tony Pattemore and Noel Richards.
