The King Of Corsica was situated at 90
Berwick Street. This pub closed in 2013. Later known as The Endurance and is
now used as a restaurant. |

The ‘King of Corsica’ pub in Brewer
Street, in Brewer Street Market, was a uniquely named pub, called after the
adventurer Theodore, King of Corsica, who is buried in the neighbouring St
Anne’s Churchyard in Wardour Street. He has a touching
epitaph, written by Horace Walpole, as he died a pauper:
“Near this place is interred Theodore King of Corsica who died in this
parish Dec 11 1756, immediately after leaving the Kings Bench Prison by the
benefit of the Act of Insolvency, in consequence of which he registered his
Kingdom of Corsica for the use of his creditors.
The grave, great teacher, to a level brings
Heroes and beggars, galley-slaves and kings,
But Theodore this moral learn’d ere dead:
Fate poured its lessons on his living head,
Bestow’d a kingdom, and denied him bread.”
How sad that he is now only remembered for his tomb, rather than the pub
which had a wonderful pub sign with his portrait on it. His portrait that
was used for the pub sign is included here.
My family worked in Brewer Street from the 1920s to the 1990s, and would
have known the pub before it was rebuilt in the 1960s. Whether it was called
the King of Corsica before the rebuilding, I do not know. |

This was my late brothers work local
(People had a work local and a home local back in the day) and it was also a
haunt of some celebrities back in the day as the Guvnor, Fred, used to run
the Showbiz XI football team from there. The likes of “Diddy” David
Hamilton, the aforementioned Dennis Waterman, Richard O’Sullivan, Paul
“Rosie” Greenwood, Robin Askwith, Cheryl Hall and Adam Faith amongst others
were seen in there regularly. |
