I am not sure when this pub was renamed “The
Lightning”, but it was built in the 1960’s as the Nuffield Arms and had this
name for most of its life.
I lived nearby and remember it being built. It became my first local when I
reached the age of 18 and supped many a pint there.
The pub was built by Courage and in its first 20 years or so it was very
successful with both lunch time and evening trade. For some reason I can
remember that the first landlord’s name was “Eden Marr”. The pub started
life with public and saloon bars, but the success led to an extension to the
saloon called the “Bull-Nose Lounge” being added. This name was a reference
to the Bull Nose Morris car (built by the Nuffield Group).
I left the area in the mid 70’s and remember visiting the pub again in the
80’s to be shocked at how run down it had become. I was no less shocked to
see the pile of rubble left by the demolition when driving by a few years
ago. |
