The Old Queens Head was situated at 101 New Heston Road. This pub has now been demolished with a block of flats built on the site.
I lived and grew up next to the Old Queen's Head from 1944 to 1963. Our cottage adjoined the entrance to the pub yard, and I remember watching the barrels being delivered and rolled down into the cellars. In the early days, there was an outdoor, un-roofed, gents at the end of the pub, next to the pub yard entrance. I remember arriving home from cubs on occasion in the dark, when a drunk might be laid on the ground outside the gents, and mum would be looking out of our door anxiously. Later, the pub had a new landlord who improved it, roofed the gents and provided access from inside. One of my jobs was to get winkles for gran next door, from the cockles and winkles barrer (sic) which traded in the car park on Sundays. Then of course, the Sally Army band would be round at Christmas. Until the time we moved away the pub was well patronised; it was sometimes a problem to find a way to our gate through all the cars. There's an ugly development of 'apartments' in its place.
