Duke Of Cambridge

The Duke Of Cambridge was situated on Bath Road.
This pub had become a home by the time I knew it in the 1950s. I have been
unable to find out when its heyday was. There was a sizeable plot around it,
and it was located more or less opposite the St Michael & St Martin Roman
Catholic church and school. Next door to it westwards were three Victorian
shops, the Queen Victoria pub (now also demolished) and then a row of
Victorian terraced houses, also long demolished.
The building was condemned and demolished. Semi-detached houses replaced it.
It was double-fronted with large Victorian windows, steps (worn in the
middle) up to double doors. Inside was a suspended floor and a decorated
counter which I took to be the old bar. The lighting was gas, its white
light brighter than electricity. |
