The Angel

The Angel was situated at 24-26 High Street and is now used as a bar/restaurant called Turtle Bay.

My mate and I had one of our first few nights at The Angel Hotel as the start of European adventure in April 1986. We had previously stayed at The President in Russell Square for a few nights just to get over jet lag. I had relatives I'd never met, who lived up the road from Staines in Ashford. After a few nights The President, we headed to Staines and it was pouring with rain. It was around lunch time and we went into the first pub we could find. We spoke to a nice young lady who was about our age and she told us there was no accommodation at this pub, but if we went around the corner we could get some accommodation at The Angel. Once it stopped raining we headed around to The Angel and I couldn't believe how dark it was inside. I thought we were in a medieval castle, it felt that old (but then again everything looked old back then particularly when you come from Australia). I'm not a drinker, but the publican offered us a beer and pulled out a Fosters Lager. I was expecting one from his fridge, but he just leaned back and pulled one off the shelf, and said there you go. I knew the English weren't big on cold beer but having a warm Australian beer seemed odd and didn't taste very good either. Later on, I actually preferred the English beer coming from the taps.
The room was definitely one star, but for GBP25, what did one expect. After 4 months in Europe, my mate went back home and I lived in Ashford for the next 4 months and made many journeys into Staines and always looked warmly at The Angel. I still think warmly of it now.
