My great-great grandfather, Barry Syrett was landlord of the Ship Inn in the early 1920’s with his wife Alice Eliza. They were both from London area, and he was until 1911 a constable in the Metropolitan Police. They were there from early 1921 at least as my great grandparents, Percy and Ina Rootes and their children Lilian Alice (my Grandmother) and Gladys May, lived there from May 1921 for a short time, on their return from Canada. My Grandmother Lilian was 7 at the time they arrived, and she used to tell tales that she was not supposed to go in the public bar, as there was a parrot in there which would swear loudly!
