Hat & Feathers

The Hat & Feathers was situated on Main Road. My Great Grandfather. William Hotching, was a renowned smuggler. He owned this pub in the early 1800's. The building still exists but is now a residence called The Hoe. He had three pubs over time. The Grapes Snettisham, also closed, and the existing Jolly Sailors in Brancaster Staithe. The Hat and Feathers hidden basement was used to hide what he called his crop ( tobacco ) He also had an illicit still to make rum. He used a horse called Black Bess to travel round the county with a cart with the smuggled goods hidden under local caught herring.
