Melbourne Hotel

The Melbourne Hotel was situated at 23 New Street. This pub is now used as a fish and chip shop.

I never saw the Melbourne as a hotel or a pub, but as a cafe, where I met my wife. That would be about 1966/67. We were both students in need of money - she at Keswick, me at Bingley. She worked serving coffee and operating the till in the first place that you came to off the slope, and I used to work in the day selling refreshments from the Melbourne on the clifftop car park; and at night I assisted frying fish 'n chips in a smaller outlet towards the town centre. When times were slack I used to make her a battered sausage, and I got a milky Horlicks. The proprietor was a somewhat disagreeable Italian named Harrod, and he had two bored sons who prowled about causing mischief. - and yes, we're still married :-)
