The Green Man was situated on the High
Street. This was in Goddard Wigg’s possession by 1794. After his death in
1810, his son Wright Wigg takes over the licence. The licence then passes to
Wright’s daughter’s husband, Nicholson and then to Jonas Wigg. Finally,
William Skerritt (Wright’s brother-in-law) takes the licence until about
1855. It was owned by Wright Wigg’s grandson, Grigson Heyhoe Wigg (a brewer
and farmer) who leased it out from 1855. From this point on it seems to have
passed out of the family, after at least 60 years. In 1917 licence renewal
was refused and eventually demolished. |
