The Safety Valve was situated on
Station Road. This pub opened in 1851 as the Railway Inn. by 1854 it's recorded as the
Safety Valve.
Through its time it was run by three generations of the Keeler family.
Firstly Robert from about 1880 until 1903 when he committed suicide by
hanging himself. A note left included the sentence "Messrs. Steward and
Patteson caused me to kill myself." Obviously brewery/landlord issues aren't
new.
His son Lemon (yes, Lemon!) ran it from 1903 until 1913 and also rented out
Ford Model-Ts. He must've been one of the first in the country to operate a
car hire business.
Lemon's son, another Robert, ran it in the early 1940s.
The pub closed in December 1970 and has since been demolished. |
