The Blue House was situated at 1-3 Howard Street and closed in 1971. This pub has been used as a furniture shop, however is now empty.

I first went to the Blue House as a 17 year old Mod in 1970. We had been walking past the Red Herring down the road and a load of Rockers (Greasers or Grebos we called them). chased us north up Howard Street and we dived into the Blue House to get away from them. A basic wood floor and bar sort of place. Formica tops to tables. Watneys Bitter and Red Barrel on tap. Few in there except us and we stopped for a pint.
The front bar had a passage to the left, which led to a small snug and beyond that the toilets.
The odd thing about it was that it was completely L shaped. From the toilets at the back it went right and headed south to a pair of wooden doors where the beer was unloaded to. Those doors, or at least where they were, are still there on Row 49.
On the occasion we were being chased the landlord let us out the back incase anybody was watching. We always used the Blue after that as our first stop on a Friday or Saturday night. It was the first pub that I would have called my "local".
Looking back there can be no wonder why it closed. On the contrary, how did it stay open for so long ?
