The Wrestlers Inn was situated at 7 Church
Plain. |

James Sharman, from Yarmouth, worked in
his youth in the Wrestlers Inn which Admiral Horatio Nelson frequented at
the turn of the 19th century. James was the first custodian of Nelson's -
Britannia Monument in Gt Yarmouth. an able seaman who was with Nelson on HMS
Victory, who helped carry Nelson after he was shot and was awarded Naval
Service Medal, with a Trafalgar clasp, which was sold at auction in 2019.
Sharman was also the inspiration for the Charles Dickens character Ham
Peggotty in his 1850 novel David Copperfield. On 6th November 1800,
following his victory at the Battle Of The Nile, and whilst staying at The
Wrestlers Inn, was made a Freeman of the Borough of Great Yarmouth. |
