The Green Dragon was situated on High Street. This pub opened
c1750 and closed in 1865, after which it was known as The Dukes Head until
1896. It is now in residential use. |

Jem Mace, 1831-1910, the first world heavyweight
champion was apprenticed as a cabinet maker to Henry Fox (jnr) the landlord
of this pub. In 1845, as a young teenager to earn tips, Jem entertained the
customers in his boss’s pub with his violin playing. |
