The Plough

The Plough in Byker was boxed into a corner where it's overshadowed by the Byker Wall as well as the Metro bridge that crosses the Ouseburn Valley. That is a particularly interesting area for old pubs (the others, thankfully, remain open) as the whole area was redeveloped in the 1960's, but there are still lots of Victorian era pubs that once formed parts of terraced streets dotted about in surreal locations. One pub was even left sitting on the edge of a field that formed one of the new open spaces! It seems they just knocked down the adjacent buildings and incorporated existing pubs into the new housing scheme - there is an equally odd situation with the many churches in the era. A colleague of mine reckons that this came about because in those days licences were so valuable that it was virtually impossible to have them extinguished. The sign still sits proudly above the upper windows whilst the property has since reopened as an oriental takeaway called Makani's.
