The Broadway was situated on The Broadway. This
pub was known as the New Broadway prior to closure and has now been
converted to use as a Sainsburys mini supermarket. |

I was up in Newcastle doing a trawl of some of my old haunts yesterday and
was very, very sad indeed to see that The Broadway in Tynemouth is now boarded up.
During the late 90s The Broadway was one of my favourite haunts; just far
enough from the seafront to have a nice mix of locals and tourists without
being too overwhelmed by the latter (I'm not doing it justice here, I'd go
so far as to sat it was in fact my favourite pub of all time), but its
decline began when it changed hands circa 2002 - the landlady retired to
Whitby as I recall - and became The New Broadway. It was never the same
after that.
Talking to a few mates who still know the area, I gather it has been closed
since at least 2009. I feel particularly emotional about this one - it
deserved better. |

From about the age of 6, I and my
family lived only 8 doors from The Broadway on the Whitley Bay side. I
remember playing in the foundations when they were building the pub, which
would have been about 1959. My mother gave my younger brother and I hell as
we used to get very muddy.
It was a Scottish & Newcastle pub (blue star), and was decorated in the
typical S&N style - swirly carpets etc., and the beer in those days was all

typical S&N style - swirly carpets etc., and the beer in those days was all
keg, but when I got old enough to be allowed in the bar it was simply too
handy to ignore. I met Alan Hull of the band Lindisfarne in there in the
early 70's and he bought me a pint! I moved away to live in East Anglia in
1975, but when visiting my parents always called in.
As your earlier correspondent rightly says, it went badly downhill some
years ago, before giving up the ghost and changing to a Sainsburys and a
small artisan cafe. |
