The Portland Arms was situated at 21 Albert Street.
This is a grade-II listed building. |

Back in the 1970s my parents went to
look at this pub with a view of taking over the tenancy. It was a
Mansfield's house then and a very busy pub. In those days breweries had
waiting lists for tenants. When you went in the front door you went down a
few steps as the pub floors were lower than the pavement. I'm surprised that
it closed because it was always packed. |
