Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace was situated on Clumber Street. This managed Shipstones pub closed in 1981 and was converted into an upmarket boutique called Crocodile. It lasted in this guise only a short while before becoming a Sun Valley amusement arcade. From 2011 it has been used as a branch of Ladbrokes.

I remember this place well. I was working on a project in Nottingham for Rediffusion TV Rentals (remember them?) with a colleague and we visited most real ale pubs in the area. We popped in here one lunchtime for a pint of Shippos and got chatting to the landlord about the beer and he took us down to see his cellar. It had more than one level, and he told us there were tunnels that led across the road and from there across the city. It made quite an impression on us.
